Benton County Fire Protection District #2 is now accepting applications for our Volunteer Resident Firefighter Program. This is a unique opportunity for individuals seeking hands-on experience in the fire service while contributing to the safety of our community in southeastern Washington State.
About the Program
The goal of the Volunteer Resident Firefighter Program is to develop the knowledge, skills, and professional readiness of individuals pursuing a career in the fire and emergency services. Participants gain valuable experience through:
- Daily operations and emergency response.
- Structured classroom instruction and fire/EMS training.
- Mentorship from experienced career and volunteer officers.
This program also promotes personal growth, teamwork, and a strong sense of community among its members.
Program Responsibilities
After completing initial training, Volunteer Resident Firefighters are assigned to one of three 48-hour rotating shifts, working approximately five shifts per month. Duties include:
- Responding to medical emergencies and fire suppression incidents.
- Participating in training drills, public education, and pre-fire planning.
- Assisting with station maintenance and apparatus checks.
- Supporting community events, station tours, and EMS education programs.
Expectations
Resident Firefighters are expected to:
- Obtain Washington State EMT-B certification within 12 months.
- Complete IFSAC Firefighter I curriculum within 12 months.
- Maintain the assigned fire station as their primary residence.
- Successfully complete a 12-month probationary period.
- Attend weekly Wednesday night drills and all scheduled training.
- Respond to emergency calls on and off duty.
- Remain dependable, responsible, and actively engaged in all assigned duties.

How to Apply?
Interested candidates will complete the following steps:
- Submit an official application.
- Pass a written exam.
- Complete a physical agility test.
- Participate in a panel interview.
- Complete a 2-day ride-along.
- Clear a background check and driving record review.
- Pass a medical physical and drug screening.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 18 years of age by the start of residency.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Washington State driver’s license and insurable by the District.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
Beneficial Additional Qualifications:
- EMT-Basic or higher certification.
- IFSAC Firefighter I or higher.
- NWCG Wildland Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) certification.
